Can’t wait to go back…

12 Oct

Ran across this post about the Naha Tug of War today when I logged onto WordPress.

Man, I miss Okinawa. When I went in 2006 for the Junior Study Tour I never thought that I would return to Hawaii with such an intimate connection to my cultural heritage. Meeting my relatives, experiencing the culture, and (of course) eating the local cuisine helped me understand why my family worked to preserve this culture within our community back home in Hawaii.

Sadly, since my trip to Okinawa, that special connection has weakened. But just a little bit. Part of it is because I don’t feel like I really fit into the Okinawan American community here–mainly because I don’t have strong ties to the Peruvian Okinawan experience like the majority of my peers. The other part is just a matter of accessibility.  But hopefully, that will change soon, especially with the 5th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival happening in October 2011. It’s the perfect opportunity for me to familiarize myself with this part of the Okinawan experience and to reconnect with my roots.
